Little Bird Denver is a great little baby and children's store in Park Hill, Denver. It's wonderful to find so many brands that are ecologically conscious and amazingly cute as well!  There are all sorts of games and toys there too.  A great place to buy gifts for the little ones in your life and support local businesses! Little Bird tries to feature local artists for some of their products and I now have greeting cards and paintings in the store.

I've had lots of fun with these crochet birds from Edwards Menagerie crochet series.  During the isolation of covid, it was a joy to create each bird and give them away to my adult children.

The mini paintings.  The dime and paper clip say it all. I used shrink plastic and colored pencils.
I had the most fun today creating miniature paintings for an old dollhouse that my daughter played with when she was little.  It needed sprucing up and paintings on its walls.  Here are some.  Now I need to figure out the framing!

I'm excited to be part of this show that just opened!

Hello from the Phoenix Office of Arts & Culture!

The art exhibition “Gems from the Burton Barr Library Art Collection,” which highlights seventeen artworks from the Burton Barr Central Library, is now on view at The Gallery @ City Hall, located on the ground floor of Phoenix City Hall at 200 W. Washington St.

From the majestic southwest landscapes of Ed Mell, to the vivid and groundbreaking work of Fritz Scholder, the art collection at the Burton Barr Central Library is truly stunning. Shown in one space for the first time, these works are typically hung on walls throughout the library’s five floors. Together, these artistic gems accentuate the history, beauty, and grandeur of Phoenix’s rich cultural landscape.

Artists included in the exhibition are Shonto Begay, George Elbert Burr, Marc Chagall, Ronald Cruickshank, John Farnsworth, Dale Kennington, Merrill Mahaffey, Ed Mell, Joan Miró, Gayle Novak, Howard Post, Genevieve Reckling, Pat Scheurich, and Fritz Scholder.

Located on the ground floor of City Hall, The Gallery @ City Hall is open weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The artwork will be on display until May 25, 2018

I just wanted to let you know that www.makeartthatsells.com has posted an interview with me on their blog page today which is so exciting!  I have so enjoyed some of the classes taken on that website and through the great teaching staff and encouraging words from Lilla Rogers.   Go to www.makeartthatsells.com/blog/  to read more.

Today, we have an interview with Pat Scheurich. Pat has taken MATS A, Illustrating Children’s Books, Bootcamp 2017 and entered the Global Talent Search.
Tell us a little about how you got started in art and design
Since I was a grade schooler, I have had a pencil and sketchbook in hand. When I was young, I used to sit at the edge of my neighborhood, in the desert outside of Phoenix Arizona and draw the cactus and birds. Both of my parents dabbled in painting as hobbies, so I had lots of encouragement. High School art classes were my favorite and I went on to University to get a Bachelor of Fine Art degree in Design. I worked for advertising agencies out of school and did some teaching. Later, I painted murals and then started doing studio artwork.

Lilla always says “People buy your joy.” What brings you joy?’
My inspiration is found in simply everything. We are surrounded by living things and other objects that I am compelled to record in my own, unique fashion. Plants, in particular, have always been a focus of my work and wherever I am, I know where the closest botanical garden is

Which is your favorite market(s) to design for and why?
I love working on canvas and wood panels of many different sizes and wall art has been a favorite market of mine for awhile. I like combining many layers and textures in my pieces which incorporate collage, acrylic, pencil, and pen. Since I create art for art shows and various venues, wall art seems to be a great fit right now.

What are you working on currently?
I am currently working on an alphabet design that would work as a poster and possibly a children’s book. I am also working on creating pitches for book publishers using some of my characters and what I learned in the Illustrating Children’s book course with Lilla and Zoe. I am also getting ready to create another group of paintings for local shows that I am part of. Lastly, I have work that is licensed for needlepoint canvases and I’m always creating pieces for that market.

Childrens Book Illustrating Class

I've had great fun recently with classes through www.makeartthatsells.com.  I have so far, taken a class called Make Art that Sells A which consisted of assignments involving fabric design, houseware product design, wall art and gift product design.  It has all been fabulously fun and I learned so much!  My recent class in Children's Book Illustration has been the most satisfying and the online course came at a time for me when I was recovering from foot surgery and could not drive.  It was a wonderful way of spending my days.  I have always been interested in illustrating children's books and now I have the tools to take it a step further and realize that dream!

What a whirlwind art show to be a part of!  6 days of great people to meet and patrons to buy art.  Many of the groups I met have been doing this for years.  The weather cooperated for the most part, one Sunday was blustery and a little rainy.  I'm excited for next year!

Paintings that seem to tell stories

11 Starlings
Some paintings seem to have a story that goes with them.  This paintings’ story was a collaboration with several people. With each change of type style from italic to regular you’ll know a different person is continuing the story.

Eleven Starlings, three woodpeckers and five colorful songbirds lived in a forest. It wasn’t an ordinary forest, but deep into the black forest of Germany where all fairy tales begin.
One day, the Starlings awoke to find a tiny girl on the forest floor. She was wrapped in a quilt and looked up at them, in their nests, fixing her wide blue eyes on the littlest Starling. The child hummed a tune as the birds settled down on the floor next to her, one by one.
The Starlings were keeping watch over her as she fell asleep when suddenly they heard the leaves rustle. Those on the ground chattered nervously among themselves and called to the rest of the flock. The birds that were still in the trees flew down and just as they landed on the ground a troll crept from behind a tree. The Starlings gathered around the still sleeping girl, each taking a piece of her blanket in its beak, and flew with her to the treetops.
Confused, the child awoke and sat up in the Starlings' nest and contemplated her predicament. Food was at the forefront of her mind as was the tall pine tree in which she was now perched. Suddenly she heard the call of a hunting party below and the clatter of horse hooves. As if never there, the horn, once again, sounded and the clatter of clomping of hooves turned into a rhythmic gallop and the party was gone. The child was left with the fever pitch of her Starlings' startled chirping.
When all was silent again, the little child, Kasia, wondered how she could communicate with the birds.  She knew that Starlings were smart and had even heard stories that they could learn words. Somehow she had gotten lost when her family was escaping the Yellow Marshes to make their way to the tower in the Wood. She remembered her father looking at an old map and deciding to head north.  But in her current situation, she had no idea which way to go.  Where was north?

See what you can add to the story.  :    Post your story ending in the comment section of the blog.

Lila Rogers Global Talent Search 2016!

Wow!  What a fun, but whirlwind experience it was to enter a contest to design a teacup, saucer and napkin for the Lila Rogers Global Talent Search 2016.  I had to become a much better Instagram and Facebook blogger and saw a lot of wonderful art out there as I posted drawings and paintings every few days.  I learned many ins and outs about embellishing products we use everyday.  At the core of it all is hard work and a great sense of design which comes with practice, practice, practice.  I'm looking forward to seeing who the winner is this year.
